City Centre to A457 Dudley Road cycle route

Closes 12 Dec 2025

Opened 21 Nov 2025

Overview

In 2020, we installed temporary ‘pop-up’ cycle lanes across the city to help people travel safely and actively during the COVID-19 pandemic. The routes chosen aligned with the Birmingham Walking and Cycling Strategy and Infrastructure Plan, which set out proposals for a city-wide cycle network. In many cases, these temporary cycle lanes included ‘light segregation’ from other traffic using plastic posts.

In November 2021, we consulted on making the cycle route from the city centre to the A457 Dudley Road permanent. Since the 2021 consultation, the designs have been modified to address feedback and improve the route and cycling infrastructure. We have also improved the signalised junction, including crossings at the A4540 Icknield Street.

We are now re-consulting on these updated designs. This project is funded by the Department for Transport's Active Travel Fund.

Please note, all cycle lanes will be separated from general traffic and from people walking/wheeling using a combination of:

  • Level differences (the lanes are higher or lower, with a kerb in between)
  • Lane separator units (the lanes are at the same level with a rubber or concrete kerb between them)
  • Lines marked on the ground (the lanes are at the same level)

Proposed measures and plans

The plans are split into 8 zones, and one overview plan.

Zone 1 - Clissold Passage between Spring Hill and Clissold Street

  • Creation of an off-road two-way segregated cycleway (cyclists separated from people walking /wheeling) that runs alongside the pavement from A457 Dudley Road through the park to Clissold Street.
