Sutton Park Proposed Car Parking Charges
Overview
Following the informal consultation that took place at the end of last year, the Council is seeking the views of park visitors, stakeholders, residents etc as part of this formal consultation on the proposals for parking charges. Please note the proposals have been amended using feedback from the informal consultation.
As part of the budget for 2025/26 the principle of charging was agreed to achieve necessary savings and help sustain, protect and maintain our 660 parks and green spaces. Introducing charges at Sutton Park will bring Birmingham in line with similar places around the UK to offset the cost of maintaining this destination site.
The proposed scheme at Sutton Park will result in a number of key benefits, namely:
- Improve accessibility to the park e.g. installation of formal disabled parking bays (pre-implementation)
- Manage the impact of displacement parking for residents who live in close proximity to the park through parking restrictions (pre- and post-implementation)
- Improve the car park surfaces (using car park revenue).
Surplus revenue from the proposed scheme will be used to:
- Fund investment opportunities to improve the park e.g. renewable energy projects, improvements in biodiversity
- Provide reinvestment funds for parks infrastructure
- Make improvements to the park and overall visitor experience e.g. pothole and fence repairs.
The Council is aware of the potential for displacement parking and will therefore be looking at parking restrictions in existing hotspot areas and any need for further restrictions following residents’ feedback. A separate consultation exercise will be completed around parking restrictions.
Details of the proposals and deposited documents (draft Traffic Regulation Order, plan etc) can be found within the attachments below under "Related".
During this consultation, visitors, stakeholders and residents can lodge their objection to the proposals as indicated in the Notice of Intent (or via the BeHeard Online Survey link below or the contact/consultation email inbox on the right hand side), citing the reason/s for their objection. An objection report listing the objections received will then be presented for consideration and final decision.
Why your views matter
Whether you use the park for walking, cycling, exercising, business or meeting up with people, we want to hear your views on the proposals (including rate of charging, when charges would apply and the planned approach to parking restrictions).
