Request for Feedback – Sarehole Mill
Overview
Birmingham City Council is seeking your views on the future of Sarehole Mill (charity no. 254995).
The Mill currently operates as a museum three days a week, with a strong focus on its literary links to J.R.R. Tolkien and its significant industrial heritage. We want to build on this by broadening how the site is used, strengthening literary connections, including enhanced Tolkien interpretation, and protecting and celebrating the site’s industrial past.
To secure the long‑term sustainability of the charity’s assets, the Council, as trustee, is proposing to grant a long lease (25 years) for the property to the operator.
Why your views matter
Under Charity Commission guidance for the long lease of charity land, trustees must ensure that any decision to grant a lease is in the best interests of the charity, supported by appropriate professional advice, and that they consider how the lease might affect beneficiaries and public support. As part of demonstrating this responsibility, we are seeking the views of local people, stakeholders and users of the site.
We would welcome your feedback on:
- The proposal to grant a long lease for Sarehole Mill.
- Our intention to broaden the use of the site and enhance its literary and heritage offer.
- Any opportunities, concerns or ideas we should consider as we plan the future of the site.
