Safer School Journeys - Yorkmead Primary School

Overview

The Safer School Journeys programme is a city-wide initiative designed to make streets around schools safer, healthier and more welcoming for pupils, families and the wider community.

Funded through the Clean Air Zone and aligned with the city’s Road Harm Reduction Strategy, this programme offers dedicated support to help schools identify and address road safety concerns, improve air quality, and encourage more walking, wheeling, and cycling. It also supports the vision for Kids Streets across the West Midlands.

Yorkmead Primary School has been selected for improvements as part of this programme.

We are proposing to introduce:

  • Safer and easier places for people to cross by:
  • Narrowing the junction and adding a raised table at the crossroads of York Road and Russell Road
  • Adding raised crossing points
  • Clearer signs, coloured road surfacing and road markings to make drivers aware they are entering an area with a school.
  • A wider pavement outside the school, giving people walking and wheeling more space.
  • Tree planting and cycle parking to improve the look and feel of the area.
  • Bollards or planters to stop parking on pavements.
