Snow Hill Accessibility and Improvements Programme - Steelhouse Square
Overview
Birmingham City Council, alongside Central and Colmore Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), plans to enhance public spaces and connectivity in the city centre to create an attractive, welcoming and safe environment, boost visitor numbers and enhance economic growth.
This project is part of the wider Snow Hill Accessibility and Connectivity Improvements Programme, which consists of several projects aiming to; improve public transport interchange and connectivity, enhance the public realm, and prioritise pedestrian movement, in order to transform the Snow Hill area. This is a busy city centre area comprising of high rise offices, retail, commercial and residential properties, and busy public transport facilities by both rail and bus services.
As part of the Snow Hill Accessibility and Connectivity Improvements Programme, we have already delivered improvements to Colmore Row, Cornwall Street and Edmund Street.
We are currently consulting on proposals for the Steelhouse Square project (including Steelhouse Lane, Printing House Street, Colmore Circus Queensway and The Priory Queensway).
Proposed Measures
- Closing Steelhouse Lane to motorised traffic (between Colmore Circus Queensway and Printing House Street) to provide a new public square
- Realigning and resurfacing the carriageway to remove the existing mini roundabout
- Widening and realigning the existing controlled toucan crossing
- Installing a dedicated two-way segregated cycleway through Steelhouse Square
- Installing Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) measures as well as new CCTV cameras
- Planting trees in the area and providing new seating to create places to sit and rest
- Improving accessibility for cyclists within the scheme
- Installing additional cycle stands
- Relocating the existing e-scooter stand
- Relocating the existing advertisement screen
- Maintaining access to all existing car parks in the area

What Happens Next
Following the consultation period, we will review all responses and make any necessary changes to the plans. Should the decision be made to proceed with the closure of Steelhouse Lane, it will be implemented under a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO, the legal document needed to make changes on roads).
