Tyseley and Hay Mills Liveable Neighbourhoods Pilot Business Survey
Overview
Birmingham has ambitious plans for the city to become a healthier, thriving city, and at local level we are piloting a plan to help improve health, social and economic inequalities in the Tyseley and Hay Mills area.
We are researching into “liveable neighbourhoods”, an approach to develop better access to quality every day local services and facilities that are important to residents within a short walk or cycle of their homes.

A successful liveable neighbourhood would have the following;
- Good access to quality diverse affordable housing and market housing
- Good access to quality Public Transport and Active Travel Options
- Good access to quality local healthcare services and exercise facilities
- Good access to nature and a pleasant and welcoming quality green environment
- Good access to quality educational services
- Good access to quality employment & training opportunities
- Good access to a quality local shopping/retail centre, with small independent businesses meeting a range of local needs
- Good access to quality social and cultural infrastructure
- Good access to local, healthy, and affordable food
- Good access to quality digital services including Superfast Broadband/Internet Cafes
- All members of the community are able to live, work, and play in a safe, inclusive environment
Through this research with community groups, residents and stakeholders, the intention is to develop and co-produce a pilot 20 year “liveable neighbourhoods” strategy in partnership with the local community and public/third sector/private partners to help create a desirable and accessible neighbourhood for all.
This work builds on the excellent work already being undertaken and supported in the local area by the Tyseley strategic alliance such as the Tyseley Environmental Enterpise District (TEED) Masterplan, the River Cole Community Commons Project, and the West Midlands Local Net Zero Accelerator Programme, and is looking at how can these projects and others be drawn together holistically to deliver accessibility under the vision and 11 areas outlined above.
As part of the pilot, we are also seeking to understand what local businesses in the areas shopping centres need to survive and thrive. We want to get an understanding of how you feel the public realm near to your business could be improved to increase the footfall you receive, and how digital solutions could potentially play a role in this. Finally we would like to understand where your main labour supply comes from, your supplier base, and the skills and qualifications needed to support your business.
