Wayfinding totems

Closes 28 Nov 2025

Opened 6 Oct 2025

Overview

As Birmingham continues to undergo major regeneration and growth, it is important that everyone - residents, workers and visitors are able to easily find their way around the city. Clear and accessible wayfinding information plays a key role in this.

Wayfinding totems are a freestanding map-based sign. They are positioned around the city centre to assist people with navigating local areas, locating key landmarks, and discovering what Birmingham has to offer. These totems are especially useful for those walking, wheeling, cycling or using public transport.

The city council, in partnership with the West Midlands Growth Company and Transport for West Midlands, is seeking to refresh the wayfinding totem network by:

  • Updating the mapping on existing totems
  • Replacing missing or damaged totems
  • Installing new totems where required

This consultation seeks to get your feedback on the current wayfinding totems in Birmingham city centre, and how they can be improved.

Providing up-to-date information on wayfinding totems across the city centre will help people to access employment, education facilities, leisure and cultural activities in the city. This project is also in line with Birmingham's Transport Plan, which aims to prioritise active travel in local centres.
