Subsequent to the consultation on the partial signalisation of the roundabout, the Metro Extension along Broad Street to Five Ways was approved. This will have an effect on the original proposal and, as a consequence, the scheme is being reviewed.

Overview

Birmingham City Council is considering a proposal to partially signalise Five Ways Roundabout. The proposed scheme will be designed to improve traffic flow through the junction and reduce journey time.  The scheme will include the signalisation of the Islington Row, Hagley Road and Ladywood Middleway arms of the roundabout.

The scheme is shown on drawing (Drawing no: CA-02703-S3-003). The works comprise the installation of traffic signal control at the Islington Row Middleway, Hagley Road and Ladywood Middleway roundabout arms.  The scheme may also include amendments to the circulatory carriageway markings on the roundabout.  It is also proposed to shorten the bus lane on the Broad Street approach to improve storage for left turning traffic.

The works are provisionally programmed for construction in late 2014/early 2015 and are designed to complement changes required to the local highway network to facilitate the extension of the Metro into Broad Street.
