We asked

In July 2016, we consulted on the proposal to install a pedestrian / cycle Toucan crossing on Bristol Road to assist students, pedestrians and cyclists to cross this busy road.

You said

65% of respondents supported the scheme and 35% did not.  The main contention was potential delays caused by introducing another pedestrian crossing in the area, and possible glare into properties from the traffic signals.

We did

The design of the crossing will ensure that all the crossings in the area are connected and will operate intelligently to minimise delays and traffic signal heads will be fitted with special hoods to prevent glare into adjacent properties.  The crossing is programmed to be constructed in summer 2017 as part of the larger Birmingham Cycle Revolution (BCR) scheme

Overview

Working with King Edwards School in Edgbaston, Birmingham City Council is considering the implementation of a traffic signal controlled ‘toucan’ crossing on Bristol Road, as shown on drawing CA-02816_S1_001, to assist students, pedestrians and cyclists to cross this busy road.

The main elements of the scheme are:

  • Provision of a staggered dual Toucan crossing, linking the two shared use cycle/pedestrian footways to provide a facility for pedestrians / cyclists to cross at this location.
  • A new path across the central reserve to link the crossings, along with a review of the existing street lighting.
  • Removal of approximately 6 trees to ensure drivers can see the traffic signals. The trees removed will be replanted on a two for one basis in the locality.

Subject to all necessary approvals, works are currently programmed for construction early 2017.
