Overview

Further to the commissioning by Government, Birmingham City Council (BCC) announced the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) in June 2019 as part of a commitment to reduce the city’s carbon emissions and improve air quality in the city centre. The CAZ was implemented in June 2021 to tackle poor air quality and improve residents’ health in the city centre by charging the owners of the most polluting vehicles. BCC’s interim report in March 2022 showed that there has been an average 13% reduction in the levels of NO2 within the Zone (when comparing 2019 (pre-Covid) to 2021 results). The CAZ is the area inside the A4540 Middleway ring road (excluding the Middleway itself) and is operational 24/7.

Which types of vehicle have to pay the £8 per day CAZ daily fee?

The Clean Air Zone daily fee applies to all vehicles (except for motorcycles/mopeds) that do not meet the emission standards for the zone and do not have a valid exemption in place.

If your vehicle meets the following criteria you should not need to pay the daily fee:

  • Diesel – Euro 6 (VI) standard or better
  • Petrol - Euro 4 standard or better
  • Gas – Euro 6 (VI) standard or better
  • Hybrid electric – the diesel/petrol engine must meet the relevant criteria above
  • Full Electric or Zero Emission vehicles

Use the vehicle checker to confirm whether or not your vehicle meets the emission criteria of the zone.

This survey is for CAZ residents who currently have a CAZ exemption permit. As the exemption is scheduled to end on 31st May, BCC is carrying out this survey to better understand how you have, or plan to, change the way you travel. Feedback from this survey will also be invaluable in helping to shape delivery of future schemes that may impact you.

What will happen to your responses?

BCC and its contractor Environmental Resources Management (ERM) will securely store all the data you provide as part of this survey for research purposes only and will anonymise any data used for reports, academic publications, secondary research, etc. Anonymised datasets of survey responses may be shared with other parties for research purposes. Where this occurs, it will be in a way that is compliant with General Data Protection Regulations and subject to Data Processing Agreements which will strictly limit the use of the data to research activities. Personal and diversity data will be destroyed after the project, and survey responses will be anonymised and stored indefinitely by ERM, for use in future research.
