Following feedback from you and the publication of our Emergency Birmingham Transport Plan, the plans for this scheme have been significantly changed.

A new consultation runs from 17 November to 15 December 2020.

Overview

We want to improve the A457 Dudley Road, near to Birmingham City Hospital, to reduce traffic congestion through junctions and improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

This is an area of the city where we expect a lot of changes to happen in the next few years and for travel patterns to change.

Most of City Hospital is expected to move to a new site nearby (in Smethwick) with about 750 new homes planned for the current hospital land. In addition, developments on the Icknield Port and Soho Loop sites, to the south of Dudley Road will incorporate approximately 1,200 and 700 new homes respectively.

The aim of these proposals is to improve the flow of people and goods through the area and to allow for the expected increase in travel demand.

What are we proposing?

  • The A457 Dudley Road will be widened to include sections of dual carriageway.
  • There will be improvements to the signalised junctions of Dudley Road with Winson Green Road and Western Road and the junction of Winson Green Road and Heath Street.
  • New signalised junctions will be created at Dudley Road/Heath Street and Steward Street/Dudley Road.
  • All improvements include upgraded pedestrian crossing facilities. Toucan crossings for pedestrians and cyclists will be added at Dudley Road/Winson Green Road, opposite the hospital and across the north side of the Dudley Road/Western Road junction.
  • Cycling and pedestrian facilities will be provided on the north side of Dudley Road. This will be a mix of a segregated cycling route next to the pedestrian footpath, and a shared cycling and walking path where there isn't space for separate facilities.

Below are plans of the proposals. The same pdf can also be downloaded at the bottom of ths page.

On plan 1 - Spring Hill, between Ellen Street and the petrol station

  • A new two way, segregated cycle route will be created on the north side of the road, by moving the footway back into the grass verge.
  • The current pelican Crossing to the east of Steward Street is moved to the west of Steward Street and incorporated within the proposed signalised junction.
  • Spring Hill is slightly widened to create two 3m lanes in each direction.
  • On Ellen Street (inset 01), advisory cycle signing will be added. The footpath between Ellen Street and Hingeston Street will be upgraded to a shared cycling and pedestrian path. This will link to the existing advisory cycling facilities on Hingeston Street.

Plan 2 - Dudley Road, between the petrol station and the east of Birmingham City Hospital

  • The footway on the north side of Dudley Road is upgraded to a shared cycling and pedestrian path between the canal bridge and Heath Street.
  • The entrance to Heath Street South is moved opposite Western Road to create a crossroads. The junction will be controlled by traffic signals, with Toucan Crossings for cyclists and pedestrians. Dudley Road is widened into land to the south, to create three lanes on both approaches to the junction and two lanes on both exits, with a central island between approach and exit lanes.
  • A new central island on Dudley Road runs from Western Road to Aberdeen Street; road is widened slightly to accomodate this.
  • Current City Hospital entrance and exit on Dudley Road becomes a left in/left out only.
  • Existing Pelican Crossing to the west of hospital entrance becomes 'two stage' Toucan Crossing across the road.
  • Between the hospital entance and Northbrook Street, the footway on the south side of Dudley Road is upgraded to a shared cycling and pedestrian path.
  • Parking restrictions outside St Patricks Catholic Church to be reviewed.

Plan 3 - Dudley Road, between Aberdeen Street and Icknield Port Road; Winson Green Road, between Heath Street and Icknield Port Road; Heath Street, between Winson Green Road and Dudley Road

  • The footway on the north side of Dudley Road is converted to a shared cycling and pedestrian path between the canal bridge to the east of City Hospital and Heath Street.
  • Existing entrance and exit to/from Aberdeen Street to become left in/left out only. Pedestrian refuge on Aberdeen Street widened.
  • Proposed signalised junction improvements at Dudley Road, Heath Street, Northbrook Street:
    • Existing entrance and exit to/from Northbrook Street to become left in/left out only.
    • New central verge on Dudley Road and some road widening to improve traffic flow through junction.
  • At junction of Dudley Road, Icknield Port Road, Winson Green Road:
    • Widening of Icknield Port Road and Dudley Road approach to the junction into three lanes. Buildings on corner of Dudley Road and Winson Green Road (betting shop and off license) to be included in a Compulsory Purchase Order to facilitate junction improvements.
    • Staggered 'two stage' Toucan Crossings for cyclists and pedestrians across all arms of the junction.
  • At junction of Winson Green Road and Heath Street:
    • Widening of the Winson Green Road northbound approach to the junction to two lanes.
    • Upgrade to Toucan Crossings for cyclists to gain access to the canal towpath.
  • The footway on the north side of Heath Street is widened and upgraded to a shared cycling and pedestrian path. On street parking to be reviewed.
