Between 16 May and 10 June 2022, we ran a consultation on a proposed scheme. Two engagement sessions were held, an online briefing session and a public drop-in event. The consultation received over 429 responses to the online survey.

There was a mixed response to the proposals consulted on. There was support for the aims and principles of the project, with 55.5% of respondents expressing positive sentiments towards this, compared to 29.6% expressing negative sentiments.

Concerns were particularly highlighted in relation to:

  • Parking compliance issues with respondents concerned that vehicles may park on the widened footways.
  • Impact on businesses with the removal of on-street parking provision.

Updated 27/11/25

The statutory consultation was carried out on the proposed Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) changes between 11 August 2023 and 2 September 2023. A number of objections were received, mainly relating to the loss of parking and loading from the main carriageway. Taking these objections into consideration, some changes were made to the proposals and a further consultation on the revised TRO was held between 17 March and 7 April 2025. All objections were considered and handled in accordance with the appropriate legal and governance procedures before the final decision was made to proceed with the scheme.

The works are scheduled to begin in January 2026. The updated plan titled 'Updated general arrangement plan' can be found below in the 'Related' section.

Overview

This project, funded by the Active Travel Fund, is part of the West Midlands Cycling & Walking programme and supports the proposed Places for People scheme We aim to make walking and cycling everyday choices for local journeys and leisure activities, as part of a safe and integrated transport network for Birmingham.

In 2020, an area of on-street parking was suspended on Kings Heath High Street to enable social distancing and queuing.

We are now proposing to permanently remove the former areas of on-street parking that were suspended on the High Street in 2020 and widen the footway in these areas.

We are proposing the following changes:

  • Removing the existing free parking on the High Street
  • Permanently widening sections of the footway on each side of the High Street
  • Providing loading bays for local businesses on each side of the High Street (three bays in total)
  • Providing three blue badge holder parking bays
  • Installing a number of planters along the footway
