Ladypool Road - permanent segregated cycle track proposal

Closed 11 Jun 2021

Opened 17 May 2021

Overview

In July 2019 a one-way restriction (except for cyclists) was implemented on Ladypool Road between the Alder Road junction and Taunton Road / Brighton Road junction in a northerly direction (into city) as an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO). In addition, the ETRO also implemented a contraflow cycle lane in the southerly direction (out of city), introduced a mandatory right turn onto Ladypool Road from Birchwood Road and reduced double yellow line lengths on the ‘into city’ side of Ladypool Road.

Following monitoring and feedback received during the ETRO, a decision was made to make the experimental measures permanent. The permanent Traffic Regulation Order became operational on 18 December 2020.

Monitoring identified a major issue of the contraflow cycle lane being blocked regularly by parked vehicles, mainly on double yellow lines, causing safety concerns as cyclists would be forced into oncoming traffic. To tackle this issue, it is proposed to create a physically segregated cycle track from the Taunton Road / Brighton Road junction to the Alder Road junction. This would remove waiting and loading for vehicles on this side of the road (out of city), however the safety for all road users will be improved. The segregated cycle lane is proposed to be implemented in summer 2021.

Alongside developing the segregated cycle track, other necessary improvements in the area have also been identified. The main one is a refurbishment of the pedestrian crossing facility near the Alder Road junction. It is proposed to bring the crossing facility up to current standards which includes the signal heads being changed to reflect the contraflow cycle lane arrangement.
