We asked

We asked whether the relocation of services within the library would affect users and whether the relocation of Brasshouse to the Library of Birmingham would provide improved facilities for learning.

You said

You were concerned about:

1) Lack of study space and overcrowding                                                                                       2) Insufficient information about the plans                                                                                       3) Reputation, opening times and classes of Brasshouse being maintained                           4) Soundproofing of rooms for learning                                                                                           5) Implication if Brasshouse building does not sell                                                                       6) Relocation of  floor one resources

We did

1) Some space will be lost on floor 1, however more spaces will become available on floor 3 and the ground floor. LoB express will increase opening hours with access to ground floor study space, which may help to avoid overcrowding.                                      2) We have shared the information we have about the plans. As the project develops more information will become available and we continue to accept comments at both sites.                                                                                                                                              3) We will be working to maintain the reputation of Brasshouse and the language centre will continue to use the same title at the new location. Classes and opening times of the current Brasshouse will be maintained.                                                                4) The contractors we are working with have a brief which includes the need for the classrooms to be quiet for language learning. This has been one of our priorities.          5) If there is a delay in the sale of Brasshouse, then the council will look at using prudential borrowing to fund the interim period.                                                                     6) The majority of Business and Learning resources and services will be relocated on floor 3. A part of the stock may need to be located elsewhere in the library.

Overview

It is proposed that Brasshouse Language Centre, currently based in Sheepcote Street, be relocated on the first floor of the Library of Birmingham. To achieve this, services now based on the first floor will be relocated to other floors. In addition 24 classrooms and a reception area for the Language Centre will be created in the existing space. These will be newly built or adapted from the existing rooms. In either case, the look and feel of the Library of Birmingham will be maintained. Services to library users and learners will be maintained as now. A limited library service will be resumed from 9am to 9pm on weekdays.

As a user of The Library of Birmingham or a learner with Brasshouse Language Centre, we wish to obtain your views on the above proposals. Please answer the questions which follow to give us feedback. Questions 1-4 refer to the Library of Birmingham and questions 5-8 refer to Brasshouse Language Centre. You do not have to answer all the questions.
