City Centre riding, cycling, skateboarding, riding a manual scooter, riding a e-bike or e-scooter Public Space Protection Order
Overview
Birmingham City Council is considering the introduction of a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to combat anti-social behaviour (ASB) in the City Centre area in respect of inconsiderate and dangerous riding, cycling, skateboarding, riding a manual scooter, riding a e-bike or e-scooter.
PSPO's are part of the ASB legislation, which was introduced nationally in October 2014. This order will provide the Police and designated Council Officers with additional powers across a defined geographical area to tackle a wide range of anti-social behaviours. Find out more about PSPO's by visiting:-
The prohibitions within the order have been put into place due to known issues and reports made to the Police and the Council from residents, visitors, businesses, and professionals who live, work and travel through the City Centre.
The behaviours complained about include inconsiderate and dangerous riding, near misses and accidents that cause alarm and distress to pedesrians. We propose that the order be in force for 3 years.
This consultation is now live until midnight on the 31st of January 2025 and it is your opportunity to put forward any views and opinions. Attached is a full copy of the proposed order, alongside a map outlining the area that will be affected.
Documents we have attached to make the consultation more accessible and simple to complete are as follows (and can be found in the related documents at the bottom of this page):
- Proposed PSPO with Map.
- Consultation Document with evidence and a copy of the proposed PSPO.
- Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document.
- Abbreviation Guide.
If you are unable to complete this consultation online or would prefer to talk to someone in person, we will be hosting various events across the area during the next six weeks, including face to face surveys within the PSPO location area, and these will be advertised through the Police and Council social media pages and through updates on this platform.
When the consultation process is concluded, all responses and intelligence will be collated, and a decision will be made between the appropriate Council and Police leads as to whether or not the PSPO will be made and what prohibitions will or won't be included.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Trading Standards department using the details below. Likewise, if you require this consultation in a different language or format, please let us know, and this can be arranged.
