Safer School Journeys - Lift Lea Forest

Overview

The Safer School Journeys programme is a city-wide initiative designed to make streets around schools safer, healthier and more welcoming for pupils, families and the wider community.

Funded through the Clean Air Zone and aligned with the city’s Road Harm Reduction Strategy, this programme offers dedicated support to help schools identify and address road safety concerns, improve air quality, and encourage more walking, wheeling, and cycling. It also supports the vision for Kids Streets across the West Midlands.

Lift Lea Forest has been selected for improvements as part of this programme.

We are proposing to introduce:

• A one-way on Hurstcroft Road (from Ridpool Road to Eddish Road) to improve access and safety
• Safer and easier places for people to cross by:

• junction narrowing to slow vehicles, including a raised junction table at crossroads of Hurstcroft Road and Ridpool Road
• raised crossing points to improve safety for people walking and wheeling 

• Tree planting to improve the look and feel of the area
• Double kerbing and bollards or planters to stop parking on pavements
• Extended School Keep Clear markings outside school entrance to improve visibility

We are also considering two options:

• Option A: Introduce speed cushions along Eddish Road to reduce vehicle speeds
• Option B: Extension of footpath at junction of Eddish Road with Hurstcroft Road and Loeless Road, removing through traffic to improve safety for people walking and wheeling
