Although we received no adverse comments to the overall proposal there were some specific issues relating to the scheme. • The scheme should be extended to Langleys Road. - The scheme has been extended to Langleys Road. • Bristol Road should not be made 20mph until the Triangle works have been completed. - 20mph on Bristol Road will be implemented as part of phase 2, after the completion of the Triangle works. • Cycle Facilities should be introduced within the Local Centre. - 20mph through the local centre will encourage more cyclists to use the Bristol Road through the Local Centre. • Raddlebarn Road, Greenland Road, Selly Park Road and Serpentine Road should also be included in the 20mph scheme. - The 20mph proposals are limited to local centre and the surrounding roads. These roads will be considered as part of the city wide 20mph proposals. • Raised table at the Bristol Road/Grange Road/Dawlish Road junction will cause discomfort for drivers. - The Raised Table at the junction has been removed from the scheme.

Overview

Birmingham City Council is working in partnership with Centro to deliver sustainable transport measures along the Bristol Road A38 within the Bournbrook/ Selly Oak Local Centre.

We are seeking to implement the following works in autumn 2014, these works are shown on drawing no: SHT–30-0000-C-004 (D) and are known as the ‘Phase 1 Works’:

  • Installation of additional cycle parking facilities within the local centre
  • Proposed 20mph zone / limit
  • Upgrading of existing traffic signals
  • Upgrading sections of footway to provide a consistent surface throughout the local centre
  • De-cluttering and replacement of some street furniture
  • Raised table (road surface) at the Bristol Road/ Grange Road/ Dawlish Road Junction
  • Dropped kerbs and tactile paving at crossing points
  • Entry treatments at two side roads.

As you are aware, the works to complete the full Selly Oak New Road at the Bristol Road/ Harborne Lane/ Chapel Lane Triangle are still outstanding. Once these works are complete and after securing developer funding, further improvements are proposed in the Bournbrook/ Selly Oak Local Centre. The indicative programme for these works is 2016/17. The works known as the ‘Phase 2 Works’ are detailed below and shown on drawing no: SHT–30-0000-C-001 (F):

  • Downgrading the carriageway from 4 to 2 lanes
  • Central refuge strip between Dale Road and Grange Road
  • Kerb, build-outs and parking bays
  • Enhancing the road surface material to the raised table implemented as part of the ‘Phase 1Works’
  • Entry treatments at all side roads
  • New highway trees where possible.

We will also be holding public exhibitions at the Selly Oak Library (669 Bristol Rd, Birmingham, West Midlands B29 6AE). The exhibitions will be held on Tuesday 28th January 2014 (2pm - 7pm) and Saturday 8th February 2014 (10am - 2pm). You are encouraged to drop in and discuss the proposals with officers from the Council.

These are preliminary proposals and may be subject to change depending on responses received to this consultation.
