We asked

Following the introduction of the Chamberlain Gardens Controlled Parking Zone, we received feedback from people in the Waterworks and St. Johns area, suggesting that parking has become more difficult. We believe the ideas shown in our initial design would help to protect on-street parking provisions for the local community. Such a scheme would prevent people who are travelling to destinations outside Waterworks and St. Johns from leaving their cars in your street, making it far easier for you to park close to your home or local business.

There not was sufficient support from consultees for us to proceed to detailed design and second stage consultation. A full consultation report will be available on this page soon and we will be considering alternative ways in which local parking concerns may be addressed.

Overview

Following the introduction of the Chamberlain Gardens Controlled Parking Zone, we received feedback from people in the Waterworks and St. Johns area, suggesting that parking has become more difficult. Why your views matter

A Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) was implemented in the nearby Chamberlain Gardens area in December 2009. The aim of this scheme was to reduce parking problems for residents caused by commuters to offices on Hagley Road and visitors to Broadway Plaza.

A review of the scheme following 12 months of operation revealed that the majority of respondents (67%) within the CPZ felt that the scheme had improved parking in the area for them. However, parking beat surveys in the Waterworks & St. Johns area have revealed increased on-street parking pressures on nearby streets such as Waterworks Road, Reservoir Road and Oliver Road. We have also received feedback from residents and businesses in these areas relating problems such as residents struggling to find a parking space, vehicles being parked across driveways, vehicles blocking the road or pavement and difficulties for wheelchair users.

We are now looking to see if there is anything we can do to improve the parking in the Waterworks & St. Johns area. We believe that this is an opportunity to improve on-street parking provision for the local community. In areas where a lack of available parking space is causing drivers to park dangerously or inconsiderately, controls could help to reduce illegal parking and improve safety.

What happens next

This consultation is the first stage of the Waterworks & St. Johns Parking Review and no decision has been made about whether changing the parking controls is right for the area.

The views and information we get back from this consultation will help us understand whether a parking scheme is something the community supports. This is why we encourage everybody to return the attached questionnaire.

If responses are largely positive, further work will be taken forward and more information will be circulated once this has been completed.
