Proposed advisory contraflow cycle lanes - Birmingham city centre

Overview

Birmingham City Council is planning to add advisory contraflow cycle lanes on some streets in the city centre. The aim of these lanes is to improve connections for people cycling.

A contraflow cycle lane means that people cycling can travel in both directions on a one-way street, with a lane marked on the street for them to use when going in the opposite direction to motor vehicles. An advisory cycle lane is marked with a broken white line painted on the ground, which means that motor vehicles can legally enter the lane if they need to.

The streets we are considering are used by quite small numbers of motor vehicles, travelling at low speeds. Therefore, an advisory cycle lane should be enough to provide safe space for people cycling and to remind drivers of motor vehicles to look out for cyclists.

In this first phase, it is proposed to deliver advisory contraflow cycle lanes in the following three areas:

  • Lionel Street and Fleet Street
  • Steelhouse Lane and Corporation Street
  • Church Street

Segregated cycle lanes are not proposed due to low vehicle volumes and speeds on these streets.

The changes would include new signs and road markings, as well as a small section of space shared between people walking and cycling on Steelhouse Lane.

Funding for this project comes from the Government’s Active Travel Fund (tranche 3), following a successful bid led by West Midlands Combined Authority.

Lionel Street and Fleet Street

The proposal allows cyclists to travel in an anticlockwise direction on Lionel Street and Fleet Street. Road markings and signage are proposed for these two streets.
