Overview

We would like to hear about your views regarding the Draft Birmingham and Solihull Dementia Strategy 2022-2027.

Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board (ICB), Birmingham City Council and Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council have joined forces, to collaborate with stakeholders including statutory, voluntary and third-sector organisations.

Over, the last year we have asked people with dementia, their carers, and other health and social care colleagues, what the focus should be to improve the care and support we provide to people, from activities aimed at preventing dementia, through to care at the end of people’s lives.

This strategy is a plan that will hold everyone working in health and social care accountable for the improvements we will make over the next five years.

About Dementia

Dementia is not a normal part of ageing, 1 in 3 cases of dementia could be prevented by making lifestyle changes.

The strategy focuses on a five stage ‘Well Pathway’ starting with prevention, and then looks at the support stages for those who are diagnosed with dementia and their carers.

A dementia journey will begin when someone becomes aware of changes to their memory, or other symptoms associated with dementia. Depending on individual circumstances through the progression of their illness, they will experience diagnosis, treatment, post-diagnosis support, living well with dementia, and eventually end of life care.

This means that the provision of appropriate care and support, across the entire dementia journey, must be personalised in line with some of the unpredictable complex symptoms of the condition.

Well Pathway
The Well Pathway provides the route for a patient and their carers along the Dementia journey.

  • Preventing well – I was given information about reducing my risk of getting dementia.

  • Diagnosing Well – I was diagnosed in a timely way and able to make my own decisions, know what to do to help myself and those who can help me.
  • Treating and Supporting Well – I am treated with dignity and respect and get the right treatment for my dementia and life.
  • Living Well – I know those around me, support me in a safe and accepting way and that I feel part of the community.
  • Dying Well – I am confident my wishes will be respected, and I can expect a good death.
