We did

We can confirm that the Cabinet Member for Children Families and Schools jointly with the Strategic Director for People approved this proposal on 30th January 2017.

The Local Authority, in exercise of the powers conferred on it, has determined to implement the proposal as detailed in the published proposal documents.

Overview

Birmingham City Council is consulting on a proposal to make prescribed changes to  Thornton Primary School:

  • Alter the lower age limit of Thornton Primary School from 4 years to 7 years, from 1st September 2017.

Thornton Primary School is a community primary school located on Thornton Road, Ward End, within the Washwood Heath ward of the Hodge Hill district of the City.

The Council is proposing that the school stop offering reception places from 1st September 2017. Authority has been given from the Office of the School’s Adjudicator for no pupils to be admitted in September 2017.

As a result of these proposals Key Stage 1 (infant) provision will be phased out of the school by September 2019, as, at this time all current infant pupils will have progressed to the Key Stage 2 (junior) phase of the school.

The Council also proposed that the school’s admission number in Year 3 will be reduced to 120 from 1st September 2020 onwards.

When all infant pupils have progressed up to the junior phase, the school will become a junior school and will continue to be linked to Sladefield Infant School.

The school’s admission criteria for entry to year 3 currently state that the pupils who attend Sladefield Infant School have priority when places in year 3 are allocated. The Council proposes that the admission criterion would stay the same.
