Birmingham City Council - Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP)

Closed 2 Nov 2020

Opened 21 Sep 2020

Results updated 23 Feb 2021

The consultation ran from 21/09/2021 to 2/11/2021. We asked for comments regarding a revised Air Quality Action Plan that sets out the actions that Birmingham City Council will take to achieve compliance with the annual mean air quality objective for nitrogen dioxide.

A total of 65 responses were received, 58 from individuals and 7 from organisations. The response was broadly supportive with 35% of respondents saying they approved of the approach set out in the plan and a further 33% saying they partly approved.

Many suggestions were received regarding improvements/additions to the plan. However many of the suggested ideas were outside of the scope of the plan, i.e. not related to compliance with the nitrogen dioxide air quality objective. Therefore we don’t intend to change the actions set out in the plan. It is noted though that many of the ideas are already being addressed, or will be addressed, in other Birmingham City Council policies or plans, such as the Clean Air Strategy, Birmingham Transport Plan, Emergency Transport Plan, and the Parking Supplementary Planning Document.

We also asked if citizens would like to see signage and adverts to discourage idling. 79% said Yes. Such action is outside the scope of the air quality action plan. However it is proposed that this matter will be addressed in the forthcoming Clean Air Strategy.

Comments were made by some organisations seeking amendmends to text within the AQAP to better reflect policy development such as from Transport for West Midlands and these have been incorporated. These do not materially affect strategy proposed within the AQAP.
