Castle Vale Filton Croft Play Area

Closed 30 Jun 2023

Opened 19 May 2023

Overview

We have extended the consultation period until Friday 30th June so you can have more time to let us know your views.

We are currently looking at options for the refurbishment of the small area of public open space on Filton Croft that formerly housed a local play area.

There are calls from some local residents to reinstate a play space in this location, although other nearby sites suitable for a larger play area are also available and being considered.

If the play facilities were to be relocated elsewhere, another option proposed under the new Future Parks Accelerator plans would be to turn the space at Filton Croft  into a small Community Garden for the enjoyment of the estate's residents.

This option could be achieved alongside the provision of a new play space in a more neutral location if the results of the consultation support this approach.

Why your views matter

The old play area on Filton Croft was decommissioned a few years ago in part due to the high levels of vandalism and anti-social behaviour that were associated with the site. The equipment and surfacing had been damaged repeatedly and there were recorded instances of arson, after hours drinking and other nuisance to local residents surrounding the space.

Whilst the Castle Vale Estate has many other play areas, both small local ones and the larger ones at Centre Park and Farnborough Fields, the loss of the Filton Croft Play area has meant that nearby local residents have had to walk slightly further to reach their nearest play space.

For this reason, we are seeking feedback from local residents on what they would like the space at Filton Croft to be used for and if an alternative nearby site for play facilities should be considered instead.

Alongside the decisions on location it would be very helpful to have an idea of the type of play activities that you would like to have in the park.

We have included a number of questions in the following survey, which are centred around discovering your preferred play activities. We would also like to find out, which other play areas you currently visit and what it is you like about them.

It is important for us to hear your views on what happens in your local area, in addition the proposed scheme will contribute to the Council’s key priorities:

  • Birmingham is a fulfilling city to age well in: through the visible investment and physical improvement of the site increased numbers of residents will be encouraged to participate in healthy recreation and physical activity.
  • Birmingham is an aspirational city to grow up in :  through the design improvements, children and young people of all backgrounds and abilities will have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors in a safer and brighter environment.
  • Birmingham is a great city to live in: The proposed improvements to play areas and associated landscape works will encourage more visitors to the park and by deterring vandalism and anti-social behaviour will provide a safer environment for site users.
