We asked

If you support the revised proposals for the new bridge

You said

Birmingham City Council received 2 petitions during the consultation. The first petition contained 79 signatures in support of the scheme, whilst a second petition containing 87 signatures was received opposing the scheme . We have also received completed questionnaires via post and the Be Heardwebsite, of which 17 were supportive and 11 against the proposed scheme. Overall therefore, a total of 96 responses were received in support and 98 against the proposal to introduce a new access bridge at Minton Road.

Further discussions have also been taken place with Environment Agency (EA) during the consultation process regarding the flood alleviation measures which would need to be incorporated within the scheme. The latest EA requirements would mean that the proposed level if the bridge would be signaficantly higher than originally envisaged and therefore more visually intrusive. There would also be an increased cost in building such a structure, for which a budget is currently not available.

Consequently, Birmingham City Council is proposing not to implement the bridge proposals at this moment in time for the reasons stated above.

Overview

Following the previous consultation carried out in 2015, Birmingham City Council have revised the proposals for the new cycling and walking path from Minton Road to West Boulevard. This is in line with comments received at the last public consultation.

The revised route proposal will link the existing path from Minton Road to West Boulevard with a new metal bridge. Existing stepping stones will be removed and planting will be included in the scheme to increase the security to the existing property boundaries. Please see attached layout for further details.

The proposed scheme to improve the existing path at Woodgate Valley Country Park, south of Bourn Brook and new crossing on West Boulevard have been approved and the work expected to start in late summer/ early autumn.

These proposals form part of the Birmingham Cycle Revolution (BCR) project which is developing a network of routes through green open spaces and along canal towpaths. The project is also developing routes on main roads, quieter back street roads, 20mph speed limit areas and other supporting measures including cycle parking.

The project is jointly funded by Birmingham City Council and The Government’s Cycle City Ambition Grant. As well as building routes like this, the project is working with schools, workplaces and at leisure centres to get more people cycling.  There are many ways you can get involved!  Check the website at http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/bcr
