We asked

As part of the Birmingham Cycle Revolution project we asked if there was support for the proposal to improve the informal path which runs next to the Small Heath Highway to provide better access to the Grand Union Canal towpath.

You said

As there are no residents in the immediate area surrounding the path (which runs between the Small Heath Highway and the River Cole and a waste transfer site) and there was only one option for the path improvement, the consultation focussed on key stakeholder consultation and so was removed after a short time from the BeHeard website. The key stakeholders, interested parties and landowners were in favour of the path improvement.

We did

We completed the improvement to this path in line with the support received from the key stakeholders.

Overview

The City Council was successful in securing a Cycle City Ambition Grant from the Department of Transport worth £17million. The bid was developed focused on the city centre and a surrounding cycle commuter catchment area of 20 minutes cycling time from the ring road, to optimise potential modal shift. The CCAG programme consists of fifty work packages under the themes of Main Corridors, Parallel Routes, City Centre, Green Routes, Canal Works, Local Links and Supporting Measures.

Birmingham City Council Cabinet approved the Full Business Case on 20 January 2014 for Green Routes element of the overall programme which this project is part of this programme.

This project consist of construction of 2m wide bitumen-bonded gravel (spray-and-chip) on a sealed bitumen base course from Coventry Road end of Small Heath Highway to Grand Union Canal, parallel to Small Heath Highway and River Cole. Please refer to attached drawing for further information.
