A45 Coventry Road Cycle Route
Overview
Birmingham City Council are planning to build 2.7km of continuous cycle provision along the A45 Coventry Road, linking the end of the current cycle route on Oldknow Road and Swan Island.
The cycle route will connect with the existing Phase 1 scheme that links the city centre with Oldknow Road, providing a continuous route between the city centre and Swan Island.
This project aims to
- Reduce dependency on private vehicles and increase active travel along the A45 corridor
- Reduce collisions for pedestrians and cyclists along the A45
- Contribute to decarbonisation and improve the environment locally
Proposed Measures
- 2.7km of continuous cycle provision along the A45 Coventry Road
- Cyclists to share the road with vehicles on Oldknow Road
- Introduction of a two-way segregated cycle track between Oldknow Road and Holder Road
- Introduction of a one-way cycle track in each direction between Holder Road and Swan Island
- Creation of separate crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists across the A45 Coventry Road
- Changes to existing crossings to provide a cyclops junction (dedicated cycle crossings around the whole junction) on Forest Road
- Upgraded pedestrian and cycle crossings
- Additional cycle parking
- More places to sit and rest (locations to be confirmed)
- Low-level planting
- Improved wayfinding
