What is a Direct Payment?
A Direct Payment is money that is paid to you (or someone acting on your behalf) by their local council so they can arrange their own support, instead of receiving social care services arranged by the council. Direct payments are available to people who have been assessed as being eligible for council-funded social care. Having a Direct Payment can give the person more independence and, choice by allowing them to buy the assistance or services that the council would have organised on their behalf.

Why your views matter
Birmingham City Council wants to give people more choice and control over their care and support and who provides it. We are proposing to do this by making it easier for people to take up the existing opportunity to have a Direct Payment and introduce ‘Individual Service Funds’. Direct Payments are not yet available for residential care. This means these proposals will not affect people living in residential care.
How to get involved in this consultation
We have four public meetings which are your opportunity to tell us what you think of the proposals. There are also separate meetings for providers of services, Social Workers and other professionals. Please contact us if you would like details to these.
If you live in Birmingham, or care for a Birmingham resident, and are interested in these proposals you are welcome at attend one of the meetings. You do not need to book in order to attend. Please contact us if there are any arrangements we need to make to ensure you can participate.
