St George's Permit Parking Scheme 2024

Closed 24 Mar 2024

Opened 26 Feb 2024

Overview

In the summer of 2019, residents and businesses in the St George’s area of Newtown were consulted about a proposal to introduce a resident parking scheme in the area.

The scheme was, and still is, to be an additional measure alongside the implementation of the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) to discourage people driving into the CAZ and parking all day for free on local residential streets. This will then make it easier for residents in the zone who have vehicles to park near to their homes.

The CAZ became operational within the A4540 ring road on 1 June 2021, however due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the implementation of a resident parking scheme in the St George’s area was delayed. This area is one of two remaining areas within the A4540 ring road that has yet to have a resident parking scheme (also referred to as a controlled parking zone) introduced.

The delay has however enabled us to review the feedback that we received from residents and businesses in 2019, and to formulate some revised proposals in line with the Birmingham Transport Plan policy document which was adopted in October 2021.

Parking Proposals

  • The resident permit parking scheme will operate 7 days a week between 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m (for residents displaying a St. George's resident or visitor parking permit) on residential streets within the area
  • Only local residents will be able to apply for permits
  • One resident permit per property will be paid for by Birmingham City Council (using CAZ income) for the first two years of the scheme, after which residents will be responsible for purchasing permits themselves. The cost of a permit for one car will be £299.00*
  • Additional permits will cost £360.00* (subject to availability)
  • No charge for Blue Badge holders
  • On other streets, “paid-for” parking bays would apply between 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m, with payment required using a “Pay by Smartphone App”
  • Business permits will be available for local business workers to park in the “paid-for” parking bays for £376* per year
  • Where “paid-for” parking bays are not present, parking will be prohibited (double yellow lines)
  • Overnight, parking will be available in both resident parking spaces and “paid-for” parking bays for anyone free of charge

* Please note that these prices are reviewed annually and are subject to change.

Proposals may differ slightly in some areas, please let us know when responding to the consultation if you require further details on a specific street.

After the consultation closes, we will review all your responses and make any necessary changes to the plans. After this, there will be a period of legal consultation on the Traffic Regulation Order before the scheme can be implemented.

We plan to introduce the changes later in 2024. At this time we will contact residents and businesses again with details of the final plans and how to apply for permits.
