Summer Hill Road/Sand Pits (B4135) bus lane

Closed 23 Aug 2021

Opened 26 Jul 2021

Overview

As we work towards a green/low-carbon travel recovery from Covid, we need to make sure that public transport is constantly improving to make journeys quicker, easier and more reliable.

Buses have a huge part to play in helping achieve these visions. Transport for West Midlands, part of the West Midlands Combined Authority, and Birmingham City Council, are working together to improve the network in Birmingham, helping to make bus travel more attractive by reducing journey times and improving reliability. This scheme will enhance bus priority through the city centre, supporting the wider delivery of cross-city bus routes

The Proposal

We are proposing to install bus lanes which will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week which also allow use by cycle, motor cycle and hackney carriage.

Heading into city the Summer Hill (B4135) scheme includes:

  • Installation of bus lane on the B4135 from south east of the junction with Powell Street to west of the junction with Camden Street, on the approach to the roundabout at the junction with Newhall Hill
  • Continuation of the bus lane from north west of the junction with Charlotte Street to join up with the existing bus lane adjacent to Lionel Street.
  • Upgrade of bus stops

Heading out of city the Summer Hill (B4135) scheme includes:

  • Installation of a bus lane on the B4135 starting opposite Fleet Street and continuing on the left slip road avoiding the roundabout at the junction with Newhall Hill. All other motor vehicles will use the roundabout.
  • The bus lane will end on the approach to the junction with Summer Hill Street where the carriageway will return to two lanes for all vehicles.
  • There will be no motor vehicle access into Edward Street from B4135.
  • Two way access for cyclists on Edward Street between B4135 and Helena Street
  • Upgrade of bus stops

This scheme will complement the proposed changes in the Paradise Public Transport Improvement Scheme that was consulted on earlier this year.
