Overview

Birmingham Special Educational Needs and Disability Consultation

On this page you can find out more information about the Special Educational Needs and Disability Strategy. You can use it to join in the consultation about the development of a new strategy in Birmingham.

You will be able to give your views on the future of Birmingham and children and young people with special educational needs and disability and their families.

There are around 42,000 children aged 2 to 18 years with some form of additional need or disability – this is around 22% of the school population. Of these, about 91% are in mainstream schools and 8% are in special schools. Around 6,000 children have SEN Statements.

The SEND population is increasing in number and complexity of need, this coupled with diminishing public resources means that current ways of working need to change in order to maintain a service to the most in need.

We are asking big questions about data and views so far, and developing shared understanding of the issues and principles that will drive future strategy.
