In July 2015 we asked for your views on a number of highway improvement schemes to support economic growth in Longbridge as part of the Longbridge Connectivity Project. These highway improvements included:

  • Longbridge Lane / Turves Green / Coombes Lane Junction Proposals;
  • Longbridge Lane / Groveley Lane / Cofton Road Junction Proposals;
  • Longbridge Lane Cycle Proposals;
  • Bristol Road South / Lickey Road Roundabout Proposals;
  • Bristol Road South / West Link Road Junction Proposals;
  • Bristol Road South / Tessall Lane Junction Proposals;
  • Tessall Lane Cycle and Pedestrian Facilities Proposals;
  • Bristol Road South / Lickey Road Speed Limit Reduction Proposals.

You said

We received 1161 responses from stakeholders and members of public overall via online responses, hand written questionnaires and emails, each with numerous comments on the various proposals from this project.

We did

We have considered all responses and the results were presented in a Full Business Case Report to Cabinet Committee for a decision on 8th December 2015. Cabinet's decision was to approve the proposal.

Overview

In July 2014 the Government announced the outcome of a number of Growth Deals for Local Economic Partnerships. One of these deals was the Longbridge Connectivity scheme, which includes a number of highway improvement schemes to support economic growth in Longbridge.

These highway improvements schemes include:

  1. Longbridge Lane Improvements
  2. Bristol Road South and Lickey Road Proposals
  3. Bristol Road South and Tessall Lane Proposals
  4. Bristol Road South/ Lickey Road Speed Limit Reduction
     
  1. Longbridge Lane Improvements
     
  1. Longbridge Lane / Turves Green / Coombes Lane Junction

The proposals at this location include:

  • Replacing the existing roundabout with a traffic signal controlled junction with pedestrian/ shared crossing facilities within the signals. The existing signal controlled pedestrian crossing on Longbridge Lane, near number 219, on the approach to the junction will be removed.
  • Widening of the existing carriageway on all approaches to the junction.
  • New retaining wall on Longbridge Lane outside the church.
  • Waiting and loading restrictions at the junction
  • Removal of approximately 4 trees. Replacement trees will be provided in the locality.

        2.  Longbridge Lane / Groveley Lane / Cofton Road Junction

Two options have been developed for this junction

Option A

These proposals include;

  • Replacing the existing roundabout with a traffic signal controlled junction including pedestrian/ shared crossing facilities within the signals.
  • Widening on all approaches to the junction requiring the removal of approximately 24 trees. Replacement trees will be provided in the locality.
  • New retaining wall outside 296 to 304 Longbridge Lane.
  • Waiting and loading restrictions at the junction.

Option B

These proposals include;

  • Replacing the existing roundabout with a traffic signal controlled junction including pedestrian crossing facilities within the signals.
  • Widening only on the Longbridge Lane approaches requiring the removal of approximately 10 trees. Replacement trees will be provided in the locality.
  • New retaining wall outside 296 to 304 Longbridge Lane.
  • Waiting and loading restrictions at the junction.

Options A and B impact on trees and traffic capacity at the junction in different ways.         3.  Longbridge Lane Cycle Measures

These proposals include;

  • Provision of a cycle route along the existing footway and carriageway connecting Longbridge Rail Station to the Longbridge Lane / Cofton Road / Groveley Lane junction. 
  • Upgrade the existing controlled crossing outside Albert Bradbeer School to a Toucan (shared pedestrian/ cyclist) crossing.

       B.   Bristol Road South and Lickey Road Proposals

  1. Bristol Road South/ Lickey Road Roundabout

These proposals include;

  • widening of the existing carriageway,
  • repositioning the roundabout,
  • installing a controlled pedestrian crossing on the Bristol Road South
  • Creation of shared use cycle routes on the existing footway.
  • Removal of trees. Replacement trees will be provided in the locality.

        2.  Bristol Road South/ West Link Road Junction

These proposals include;

  • Creation of a new signalised junction, to accommodate the future West Link Road
  • Pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities as part of the signalisation.
  • Removal of trees. Replacement trees will be provided in the locality

The West Link Road will be delivered outside of these proposals as part of the future Longbridge redevelopment works.

       C.  Bristol Road South and Tessall Lane Proposals

  1. Improvements to the Bristol Road South/Tessall Lane Junction

The proposals include;

  • Widening into the central reservation of the A38 northbound approach to the junction.
  • Provision of pedestrian/ cycle controlled crossing on Tessall Lane south of the junction.
  • Provision of a U-turn facility for traffic on the northbound A38, located to the south of the junction.
  • No entry to Farren Road from A38 Bristol Road South.
  • Removal of existing trees. Replacement trees will be provided in the locality.

        2.  Improvements to cycle and pedestrian facilities on Tessall Lane

These proposals include;

  • Closure of Tessall Lane between the existing River Rea Bridge and Longbridge Lane to traffic,
  • Create a dedicated route for cyclists and pedestrians to Longbridge Lane

        D.  Bristol Road South/ Lickey Road Speed Limit Reduction

We are proposing to reduce the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph on Bristol Road South within the vicinity of the Lickey Road roundabout and also on Lickey Road up to the City boundary.
