Overview

The Housing Strategy is a high-level plan that sets the course for our services to develop in partnership in the coming years, whilst drilling down into those priorities to provide a detailed roadmap that will enable us to achieve our aims. It sets out our vision for housing, with inclusive actions the Council and partners will deliver and that are designed to ensure we meet the housing aspirations of our residents. We aim to set out an approach that delivers plans to accelerate housing development that will support inclusive economic growth. It also focuses on people, our plans to support our residents and create better homes and communities as we are committed to enhancing the health and well-being of the people who live and work here. Whilst the strategy sets out our priorities and the direction of travel, we know that we will need to be dynamic, flexible and responsive to changes in need and to new situations and opportunities.

This strategy is a statement of our shared commitment. A partnership approach to delivering the strategy means we will be represented by a wide spectrum of people and organisations with different interests. As we move forward, we know Birmingham is growing, in terms of its population, economy, and its ambition and we are committed to supporting this process by making sure the citizens of Birmingham have good quality, green and safe homes to live in, enabling communities to thrive. We all share the same determination to work together so that every citizen lives in a home and a neighbourhood that provides a firm foundation for their life.

Why your views matter

The Housing Strategy sets the strategic direction and priorities over the next 5 years, where relevant stakeholders drive forward packages of work that will improve the opportunities for people who live in Birmingham. Housing is something that impacts everybody; everyone needs somewhere to live and everyone has an opinion of what that should look like and how they can access it within their specific location.

Whilst stakeholders may have a view around what the priorities are and how to take these forward, it is really important that we have the perspectives of as many people as possible who live and work in Birmingham every day. We know that strategies as important as this one help to shape the housing market in the city. The people who get the most benefit of this when it is done well are the people who live in the city. We want to make sure that everyone has had an opportunity to be part of shaping this with us and look forward to hearing from as many of you as possible.

What happens next

The Housing Strategy is due to be completed and published by January 2023. Your reviews will help us to shape the priority pieces of work that are considered within the strategy. These will be collated anonymously and incorporated, information will be released publicly providing clarity around which comments have been accepted and which were not. The reasons why certain comments or changes will not be accepted, will be shared within the document.
