We asked

We asked:

whether you thought the new centre would provide a good learning environment

whether you would be likely to attend the new centre

What subjects you would like to see at the new centre

You said

You were concerned about the future of specific subjects - pottery, cookery, upholstery and woodwork

You were concerned about the parking availability

You would like some classes to be in Sutton

We did

We are exploring alternative options for pottery. There will be dedicated rooms in the new centre for cookery and upholsyery/woodwork.

The onsite parking is limited and there will be 3 disabled parking spaces. We are investigating options for a drop-off point for people who arrive by Ring and Ride and for people bringing heavy items. Otherwise there is a car park opposite the centre and nearby onsytreet parking.

We are currently negotiating with other Sutton venues to continue classes in the area.

Overview

Birmingham Adult Education Service (BAES) currently has learning sites at Boldmere and Osborne. Both buildings are in need of substantial repair, maintenance and modernisation. In addition, significant funding reductions necessitate a consolidation of assets owned by BAES to ensure sustainability of learning for the future.

An opportunity has arisen for BAES to move into newer premises in Erdington, close to Osborne centre. It is, therefore, proposed that Boldmere and Osborne close at the end of July 2016.

The new site needs work to adapt it for learning and we plan to fund this through the sale of Boldmere Centre. At the same time we plan to secure good quality premises in the Sutton area at reasonable rental cost to continue to offer a programme of courses.

The new premises are in Civic House on Sutton New Road and well served by public transport. We plan to offer a similar range of courses, however there will be no pottery or woodwork rooms ( as currently at Osborne). Learning will take place on the first and  second  floors and there is access for people with disabilities including a lift. Included in the plans are a home economics room with 6 mini kitchens for up to 12 students, a large well equipped IT suite, a learners’ room equipped with PCs and 9 large general purpose classrooms some of which have dividers to provide two smaller classrooms. There is also a meeting room, large reception area, toilets and staff facilities.
