BACKGROUND

At the heart of the wider Perry Barr regeneration effort, Birmingham City Council plan to redevelop Alexander Stadium into a high-profile venue for diverse sporting, leisure and cultural events.

The venue at Walsall Road, Perry Barr, will be the focal point of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, hosting the Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as the athletics competition.

A planning application will be submitted in Autumn 2019. The hybrid application will include both a detailed application for the ‘legacy stadium’ (i.e. all permanent features which will change and remain post Games) and an outline application for the additional elements required to deliver the 2022 Games.

Looking beyond the Games, the redeveloped stadium will meet the needs and aspirations of the community for generations to come, creating a destination venue and shaping a legacy.

Consultation events

Public consultation drop-in events were held at Alexander Stadium on 21st and 22nd June 2019. Members of the local community were encouraged to attend the consultation events, meet the project team, view the indicative plans and provide feedback before a planning application is submitted later this year.

The information you have provided will be used solely in connection with all aspects of the proposed regeneration of Perry Barr and will not be passed on to any third parties. Any personal data will be kept securely and treated in accordance with GDPR 2018.

What happens next

As you may be aware, permission to begin demolition of the three west stands was approved in August and early works have now begun. We will continue to engage with everyone in and around the site, throughout the course of the works.

We intend to submit a planning application for the redevelopment of the stadium to Birmingham City Council in the coming weeks.

There will be a further opportunity to comment on the proposals during Birmingham City Council’s statutory consultation period as part of the planning application determination process.

We expect to receive a decision on our application in early 2020. Subject to planning permission being granted, construction will begin in the Spring.
