Proposed speed limit reduction to 30mph: Birmingham area-wide scheme (Speed Limit Order)
Overview
Following a review of all 40mph speed limits in Birmingham we plan to reduce almost all of these limits to 30mph.
In July 2024, due to the number of serious and fatal collisions occurring on the road network, the Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, Councillor Majid Mahmood, declared a Road Safety Emergency. Following this, Council Leaders, the Mayor of West Midlands and West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner jointly agreed that emergency action was required.
Reducing speed limits aims to reduce the risk of road harm by slowing vehicle speeds. It also provides consistency across the city, improving driver compliance and aiding enforcement. The Cabinet Member has therefore fast tracked delivery of the proposed speed limit reductions as a key response to the Road Safety Emergency. Subject to approval of this order, the necessary changes to the highway (mainly signage changes and removal) will take place early in 2025.
The costs for this project come from the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) surplus income. This funding is ringfenced for use on transport schemes only and cannot be used for other purposes.
This consultation is about the Speed Limit Orders - the legal documents required to make changes to the status of the road.
The roads proposed for a reduction in speed limit from the existing 40 mph to 30 mph are listed in the table and plans below. Where roads share a boundary with Sandwell or other neighbouring authorities we are only proposing to reduce the speed limit on the sections of road within Birmingham.

What is included in this consultation?
A Speed Limit Order is the legal documentation required to make changes to the status of the highway (road). This consultation is to make residents and businesses aware of the proposals to introduce, and make permanent, orders in a number of streets.
Where necessary, proposals are identified on the plans, which can be downloaded at the bottom of this page or viewed in the table above.
An order is often accompanied by a plan (map) showing the proposed measures visually.
The orders in this consultation include one type of change: speed limit reduction.
